Errors in measurement

When using industrial instruments, operators must take care to minimize measurement errors. Errors can occur for various reasons, including faulty recording, randomness, or even gross blunder on the experimenter’s part. In this article, we’ll explore the different measurement errors and how to minimize them.

The most basic measurement error is the difference between measured and actual values. This is often referred to as the absolute error. Although this error is generally a positive number, it does not convey the significance of the error. For example, an absolute error of one inch in a parking lot will not mean much, whereas an absolute error of one inch will have great significance when measuring the width of a toothpick. Therefore, relative errors are a more useful representation of measurement error.

Regardless of the measurement error source, the ability to obtain accurate results is vital for progress in science and technology. Therefore, accurately calculated values are the most critical factor in the scientific and technical investigation. Calorimeters and thermometers are not without error due to heat loss through radiation. In any case, the relative error is expressed as a percentage.
